Addressing Community Needs
The Birmingham metropolitan area, including Bessemer, faces critical healthcare workforce shortages, particularly among diverse professionals. African Americans remain significantly underrepresented in medical professions—despite comprising approximately 12.1% of the U.S. working-age population, Black individuals account for only 5.7% of physicians nationwide.
ICI directly addresses this gap by creating pathways for underrepresented students to enter healthcare careers while improving health outcomes in our community.
